Gardening column: What is an air plant and how do you best care for them?
Air plants are epiphytes in the genus Tillandsia of the family Bromeliaceae.
Epiphytes do not bring nutrition from the soil by way of roots.
Instead, they cling to bark, or rocks, or other substrates. Parts that look like roots just anchor the plants.
Which air plants should not be soakedThey receive all their nutrition and moisture through hairlike structures called trichomes on their leaves.
There are three ways to water Tillandsia: misting, dunking, and soaking. When you mist, get all the leaves both top and button.
Dunking means you dunk (dip) it in water. Soaking means submerging the plant for about 20 minutes.
The best water to use is rain, pond water or spring water. If you use tap water, let it sit for several hours before using it.
In all three methods, shake the plants upside down so that no water remains pooled inside at the base.
